Why do wrinkles appear?
Wrinkles are one of the consequences of facial aging.
Aging is a universal, progressive deterioration process seen over time in all living organisms, and resulting from interaction of the genetics of each individual with the environment.
Aging due to the influence of external agents adds to chronoaging, or unavoidable aging that occurs with the passing of time. The most influencing factor in this regard is solar exposure. The damage it causes to our skin accelerates the aging process in what is known as photoaging or photodamage.
Aging causes us to lose collagen and the capacity to regenerate it, and we lose hydration and elasticity, among other aspects.
In those areas where the skin folds repeatedly because of muscle movements, or due to inherent flaccidity, the skin ultimately forms a permanent fold that becomes a genuine scar we know as a wrinkle.
The face is where wrinkles appear most and are most visible. It is therefore common to want to eliminate expression lines from the forehead and brow and eliminate wrinkles from around the mouth and beneath the eyes.

Types of wrinkles
- Static: these wrinkles are caused by fatigue of the constituent structures of the skin due to repeated movements, and which over time manifest even in the absence of movement.
- Dynamic: these wrinkles, also known as expression lines, appear with facial movements.
- Gravitational: these wrinkles are a consequence of flaccidity of the skin and appear when the facial structure sags.
Treatments: How to eliminate wrinkles
Facial resurfacing with the CO2 laser
The laser is the tool that affords the best results in aesthetic medicine. The skin is fully renewed; the laser therefore treats all the signs of aging, causing the wrinkles to disappear or become minimized.
Treatment with neuromodulators
This is the first-choice treatment for expression lines. The treatment provides a sensation of facial rest, freshness and good mood.
Factors that can accelerate and worsen the appearance of wrinkles
In addition to genetic conditioning factors, other exogenous factors are added to the sun that accelerate its appearance and worsen its prognosis:
- Tobacco and other toxic substances such as alcohol and other drug abuse
- Unbalanced diet
- Low fluid intake
- poor skin care: dehydration and skin malnutrition
- Weight fluctuations with abrupt gains and losses of adipose tissue
- Exaggerated gesticulation
- Gravity
All these factors also reduce the duration of aesthetic treatments.
Degrees of ageing
Wrinkles are one of the factors that most define the degree of ageing. The degree of ageing can be classified into evolutionary stages, and one of the most widely accepted classifications is that of Glogau:
- Type I: no wrinkles, not even when the face is animated to gesticulate, they are usually patients between 20 and 30 years old.
- Type II: only in movement, these are patients between 30 and 50 years of age.
- Type III: at rest, patients over 50 years of age.
- Type IV: very marked and deep, covering most of the skin of the face, patients over 60-80 years old.
